The Tehama District Fairgrounds in Red Bluff played host to the 6th rodeo of the 2023-24 season for District 1 California High School Rodeo last weekend. Top high school rodeo athletes from across Northern California competed in a range of events, showcasing their skills in roping, riding, wrestling, and racing.

Perhaps District 1 alumni will be competing in Red Bluff Round-Up since RC Landingham, T.J.Gray,  Jacek Frost, Brushton Minton, Jordan Spears, Justin Davis, Bailey Small were at the Texas and Arizona rodeos this spring.

District 1 High School Rodeo Finals will be held in Etna, CA on April 27-29th.  The Junior High California State Finals will be in Red Bluff, May 15 – 18.

In the bull riding, Cooper Bonham emerged victorious with an impressive score of 144. The saddle bronc riding saw Jasper Frost of Browns Valley take first with 146 points, followed by Cash Parker of Red Bluff and Cody Cash of Montague. Quention Personeni of Oroville was the sole bareback rider, notching a score of 131.

The timed events were equally exciting, with Ilan Davis of Orland clocking the fastest time of 11.60 seconds in steer wrestling. Colton Suther of Palo Cedro topped the tie down roping with a time of 24.68 seconds. In team roping, the duo of Hayden Boles and Ilan Davis, both of Orland, posted the winning time of 15.84 seconds.

Cutting events tested the horse and rider’s ability to separate a cow from the herd. Colton Suther and Sophia Halsey Diehl of Orland claimed first place in the boys and girls cutting respectively.

In the fast-paced barrel racing, Sydney Oilar of Millville blazed to victory in 28.521 seconds. Jessie Wilson of Los Molinos took the breakaway roping title with a rapid time of 6.66 seconds. The goat tying was won by Claire Boles of Orland in 16.77 seconds, while Elthia Gomes of Etna navigated the poles in 42.483 seconds for the win.

The next High School Rodeo is set for April 5-7 at the Tehama District Fairgrounds, which will also host the Junior High Finals and awards. Admission is free. The District 1 High School Rodeo Finals will follow on April 27-29 in Etna, CA. Then the Junior High California State Finals take place back in Red Bluff from May 15-18.
